Onion 'Exhibition'

• Plant onion plug plants outdoors from late spring to early summer after the risk of frost has passed.
• Onions thrive in a sunny spot with at least 6 - 8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
• Select an area with well-drained soil, preferably light, sandy, or loamy. Avoid heavy clay soils unless improved with compost or grit.
• Work the soil to a fine texture, removing any weeds, rocks, or debris. Enrich the soil with organic compost or a balanced fertiliser, ensuring it is rich in nitrogen for healthy development.
• Plant each plug 10 - 15cm apart in rows spaced 30cm apart.
• Ensure the roots sit just below the surface level, with the neck of the plant slightly exposed.
• Gently firm the soil around the plug to eliminate air pockets, and water well after planting.
• If growing in pots, use a deep container with good drainage holes. Fill with multi-purpose compost mixed with grit for drainage.

Caring:

• Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering as the bulbs mature to prevent rotting.
• Feed with a high-potash fertiliser every 3 - 4 weeks to encourage bulb formation. Avoid over-fertilising with nitrogen late in the growing season.
• Apply a thin layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep it away from the neck of the plants to prevent rot.

Harvesting:

• Harvest onions when the tops turn yellow and begin to flop over, usually 90 - 120 days after planting.
• Gently lift the bulbs using a garden fork or trowel, taking care not to damage them.
• Lay onions out in a dry, airy space to cure for 2 - 3 weeks. Once the outer skins are papery and dry, trim the tops and roots.
• Store cured onions in a cool, dark, and dry place. They can last for several months if kept in ideal conditions.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.
