Agapanthus Poppin Purple

Agapanthus Poppin Purple

Agapanthus is a distinctive summertime bloomer that’s popular with gardeners of all skill levels. If you love the beautiful intricate shapes and colours of Alliums, Agapanthus is an excellent alternative that has the advantage of flowering later – perfect for filling that summer gap with an abundance of blooms.

Peter (Chief Gardener at YouGarden) explains why Agapanthus Poppin Purple is such a gem.

Typically grown in the Mediterranean, this is the perfect plant to generate nostalgic memories of travel and family holidays in your very own garden. Agapanthus Poppin Purple is a stunningly vivid variety of Agapanthus that has the wonderful bonus of flowering for twice as long as regular varieties. Usually, Agapanthus will bloom for two months whereas Poppin Purple will create spectacular displays for four months between July and October. This is a fabulous hardworking plant that offers ultimate value for money.

A compact variety that grows to two feet, this Agapanthus is wonderfully versatile and perfect for plant pots and small gardens. However, as its namesake suggests, the most striking quality of Poppin Purple is its bursts of vibrant complexions. Before the flowers open, the colour of the spherical heads is so dark that in certain light conditions the deep blue tones can almost be mistaken for black. When the petals pop open, the colours transform into that iconic vivid shade of purple.

With its reblooming colour changing properties, Poppin Purple is a truly magical plant that will delight you and your guests throughout summer and early autumn.

Order your Agapanthus today at YouGarden and enjoy the bursts of radiant blooms year after year with absolutely no effort required!

How to plant Agapanthus Poppin Purple

For Poppin Purple to truly thrive, choose a sunny location with well drained soil.

When planting, dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot. Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure or compost to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.

Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots. Place your plant in the hole at the same level as the pot.

Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling) and firm in the spoil with you heel, avoiding the root ball.

If planting in a pot, ensure you fill it with plenty of free draining compost. We recommend our premium professional variety.

How to care for Agapanthus Poppin Purple

Poppin Purple tolerates drought well yet will benefit from regular watering in its first year of growth.

Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser monthly from spring until flowering, then, from the end of September reduce watering and feeding to allow the foliage to harden.

Poppin Purple is winter hardy down to -5 degrees. In colder parts of the UK, cover the crown of the plant with a deep, dry mulch to protect the plants from hard frosts, or grow in a pot so they can be overwintered in an unheated greenhouse.
