Houseplants make a wonderful addition to any home, bringing a snapshot of nature to your office desk, dressing up the mantelpiece, or taking up pride of place in the centre of the dining table.

Although growing and maintaining a collection of houseplants is a year-round joy to behold, it is during the second week of January that the spotlight really shines on this category of plants – as it’s Houseplant Week UK 2024!

There is no better time to share a few varieties that we absolutely adore and know you will too.

At the end of the day, the world really is your oyster in terms of houseplants you could grow – there are just so many out there, each with their own benefits and strong points.

To give you a little helping hand, we have listed just a few varieties that we love and will make a real impact on your home.

Weeping Fig ‘Ficus benjamina’

Rarely matched foliage of glossy green leaves edged with a creamy yellow and a notably thick trunk combine to form the Weeping Fig, which is top of the list of many people’s houseplant of choice.

The slender branches of this house tree begin to subtly weep with time to soften the overall look.

We love this variety, but don’t just listen to us – even the RHS have seen it fit to award the Weeping Fig with an ‘RHS Award of Garden Merit’, as a proven performer.

Aglaonema ‘Red Zirkon’

One of the best plants to achieve top results from minimum effort – this Aglaonema requires very little effort to look impressive.

Each of the flashy green leaves boast a charming stretch of pink and red, dappled in sections, with no two leaves looking the same – a unique option for the home.

What’s more, ‘Red Zirkon’ is slow-growing , only reaching an ultimate height of 90cm.

Aglaonema ‘Red Valentine’

From one Aglaonema to another, much like its partner in crime, ‘Red Valentine’ provides a show of foliage that is certainly worth shouting about.

Thick, rose-pink leaves are made fascinating by characteristic dark green blotches and edging.

Houseplants are known to clean and purify the air of the home – filtering out pollutants and neutralising gasses such as carbon monoxide, benzene, and formaldehyde. They are perfect for the bedroom, where they can help you get a better night’s sleep!

Chinese Money Plant

You may know the Chinese Money Plant under several different names, such as Pilea peperomioides or the Missionary Plant, but regardless of what you call this beauty, it is sure make an impact in your room.

Compact and upright growers, the foliage of the Chinese Money Plant looks just like mini green lily pads, sitting on the end of slender green stems – even jostling about on the plant when a gentle breeze is let in through the window.

Banana Plant Musa acuminata

Drama, style, and panache – this Banana Plant is a real go-getter, ready to expand your natural display.

Decorative foliage is glossy and an enviable shade of dark green, with paddle-like leaves that outstretch elegantly as they grow in all manner of directions from central stems.

With some patience, the leaves will become evergreen, remaining coated in a healthy colour regardless of the seasonal conditions battering against the windows.

Swiss Cheese Plant

With a playful name like ‘Swiss Cheese Plant’, it does not take much of an imagination to picture the fascinating leaves that await!

Very easy to grow, there are several reasons why this variety has stood the test of time and been a top-notch choice for indoor gardeners for years.

Young, rich green leaves grow complete with long, upward facing stems, before developing the irregular holes that inspire the name of this plant.

String of Beads

Few houseplants are as iconic and widely grown as ‘String of Beads’, also known as Senecio herreanus.

Evergreen succulents with so much joy to give – impressively long trailing stems of bright green clusters can be seen dangling from the edge of your favourite indoor pot, adding real texture and drama to the display.

Dainty white flowers can even appear on the green stems for an extra layer of beauty.

Trailing Jade Plant

We all love a trailing plant, don’t we? This is yet another sprawling houseplant that will not just sit in the pot like a well-behaved school child, instead preferring to dangle over the edge of the container.

Bright green leaves perch along the slender and fleshy stems, which emerge and intertwine in many different directions.
